data takeaways

For my final, I would like to focus on diversity in the fashion industry from a workforce perspective.

As I looked through reports and studies on the statistics, a lot of my takeaways were what I expected. Although there are more people of color working in the industry, many still feel undermined and underrepresented. That takeaway transcends the fashion industry and can be found in so many other areas, so I’d like to explore that further in a fashion context. Other takeaways include:

  • performative activism being prevalent throughout brand’s marketing and social media presence
  • few major creative directors of color in heritage luxury brands
  • many employees of color have differing views on how white people perceive a company’s diversity initiatives
  • the state of diversity has greatly improved but there’s much work to still be done

Here’s a countdown I made for tomorrow. It’s an interesting tool, and I could somehow incorporate it almost ironically, like “here’s the countdown until the fashion industry takes responsibility for its years of racism, fatphobia, and overall terrible behavior” and it’s set to a hundred years in the future. I don’t think that would suit a more serious project but would definitely drive forth a strong point.
